Milton Keynes Housing Crisis

Milton Keynes Housing Crisis

Milton Keynes Council is tackling the housing crisis with the announcement that they have secured an additional 38 flats in their bid to reduce reliance on temporary accommodation, such as hotels and B&Bs, for those families who are awaiting permanent housing.

HOUSING CRISIS Queensway House

The council has teamed up with local developers to lease the 38 flats in Queensway House in Bletchley, following its recent refurbishment. Prior to this, 179 families were said to have been living in hotels, with some of them being moved as far away as Nottingham and Reading.

The housing crisis experienced here in Milton Keynes is an echo of the crisis the UK is facing as a whole, which has seen a rise in the number of homeless people. More than 50,000 people are currently without homes. Some of these households, many of which include dependent children, will then wait in temporary accommodation such as the Queensway House scheme, until a permanent home can be found for them.

Cllr Nigel Long, Cabinet Member responsible for tackling homelessness, said:

“We are really pleased with the work that is being done to support our families into permanent housing, however there is more that we can do and we need additional support from all housing providers and local landlords to assist with long term housing solutions.”

Milton Keynes Council in their press release said that they no longer use hotels or B&Bs outside of Milton Keynes except in case of emergencies, and even then it’s for a maximum of three nights.

The Council has also made a commitment to reduce the overall number of families occupying temporary accommodation, with 641 households currently living in temporary homes in January 2018 compared with 805 in June of last year.

A spokesman for the developers at Queensway House said:

“We really do feel that this has been a positive engagement and it has definitely helped us to achieve our stated goal of "Building lives with quality homes".
